Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority

Throughout its existence, National Fire Protection has performed work at numerous locations for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA). Started in 1967, WMATA operates the national capitol area’s rail and bus system. Today, there are 86 rail stations and 1,500 buses serving a population of 3.5 million in a 1500 square mile radius. In 2010, commuters took almost 341 million trips between the rail and bus services. Some of the stations NFP has recently worked at include Pentagon, Navy Yard, and Mt. Vernon Square. Systems include wet and dry pipe sprinkler systems and horizontal standpipe systems that are located at every station along the tracks.

NFP was also involved in the construction of four new buildings at the existing WMATA Storage Yard in Prince George’s County, MD. A design-bid-build project, the four buildings required differing fire protection systems based on their intended uses. The Traction Power building houses the main electrical track generation equipment, and is protected using a FM200 system. The Wash-Down building is where WMATA train cars are brought for cleaning prior to being put back in service; this building had a dry sprinkler system installed for protection. The Main Warehouse building, where the trains are taken for repairs and maintenance, utilizes wet pipe sprinkler, preaction sprinkler, and FM200 systems. The Administration building is for the storage yard office personnel, and has wet pipe sprinkler and FM200 systems. This project was completed in 2003.
