Smithsonian Institution

Washington, DC

With his death in 1829, James Smithson, a British scientist, bequeathed his entire estate to the United States to found “an establishment for the increase and diffusion of knowledge.” President Andrew Jackson announced the bequest to Congress in 1836, but it was not until 1846, by an act of Congress signed by President James K. Polk, that the Smithsonian Institution was established. Over its 164-year history, the institution has expanded several times.

National Fire Protection has performed numerous projects throughout the Smithsonian Institution’s museums in the National Capitol Area. As with all museum contracting, special care and planning is required to ensure that exhibits are properly protected and patrons are safe at all times. NFP has performed work at the following Smithsonian facilities:

  • Arts and Industries Building
  • National Air and Space Museum
  • National Museum of American History
  • National Museum of Natural History
  • National Postal Museum
  • National Zoological Park
