The University of Miami (UM) has been enjoying a growing national prominence as a community that nurtures research, development, and commercialization of university-based innovations. To continue its creation of high-value intellectual capital and to bridge the gap between academia and industry, UM has commissioned the construction of six new buildings in the northeast sector of the 168-acre University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center Complex, better known as the Miami Health District
The six buildings are design-bid-build projects. NFP is working on the first two buildings now – the Research & Development Building (1a) and the Tissue Bank Building (1b). The project is utilizing BIM modeling for the fire protection design and coordination. The R&D Building is a seven-story administration and laboratory building, with wet sprinkler systems, standpipe systems, and a new fire pump system. The Tissue Bank is a three-story building housing clean rooms and office areas, with wet systems and standpipe systems. These two projects have an anticipated completion date of summer 2011.
