NFP awarded fire protection contract for Washington Marriott Marquis Hotel

National Fire Protection was awarded the fire protection contract for the new Washington Marriott Marquis Hotel. The $520 million four-star hotel will be only one of four Marriot Marquis properties in the country. Designed to compliment its surroundings, especially the Walter E. Washington Convention Center (another NFP project), the hotel is bound by 9th, 10th, and L Streets and Massachusetts Avenue NW.

The 1175-room, 46-suite hotel will occupy almost a full city block. The hotel will include over 100,000 square feet of meeting and assembly space in the form of meeting rooms, a grand ballroom, two junior ballrooms, an indoor event terrace, and a rooftop terrace. A grand atrium lobby and five retail and restaurant outlets on the ground floor are being incorporated into the hotel, along with a concierge lounge, fitness center, and business center.

Construction will feature the innovative top-down method for the fourteen stories above ground and 94 feet below. The hotel will also incorporate two existing buildings into its structure. The hotel was designed to earn LEED Silver certification.

Groundbreaking for the Washington Marriot Marquis occurred in November 2010; the hotel is scheduled to open in spring 2014.
