Allison Transmission Manufacturing Facility

White Marsh, MD

Allison Transmission, the premier global provider of commercial duty automatic transmissions and hybrid propulsion systems, constructed a new 400,000 square foot manufacturing facility that opened its doors in 2001. The facility was constructed to manufacture a new model of the Allison commercial truck transmission, encompassing many specialty processes, including tempering quench tanks and ovens.

National Fire Protection, through a design-assist contract, provided the fire protection systems for this facility, which included a 10” street service to a primary electric fire pump and a back-up water storage tank with a diesel fire pump, with both feeding the 10” underground loop supplying the water-based systems in the building. The interior systems consisted of primarily wet pipe sprinkler systems and hand hose stations, as well as dry pipe systems and preaction systems. Additionally, there are carbon dioxide systems, which include specialized controls to provide protection to the gas fired tempering ovens with oil based quenching tanks.
