Gallery Place
Washington, DC
Gallery Place is located in Chinatown, a small, historic neighborhood east of downtown Washington, DC, bordered by 5th and 8th Streets between H and I Streets, Northwest. It is known for its annual Chinese New Year festival and parade and the Friendship Arch, a Chinese gate built over H Street at 7th Street. Other prominent landmarks include the Verizon Center, a sports and entertainment arena, and the Old Patent Office Building, which houses two Smithsonian museums. The neighborhood is served by the Gallery Place-Chinatown station of the Washington Metro.
National Fire Protection was proud to be part of the redevelopment of Chinatown and Gallery Place. Gallery Place is a unique development and was extremely interesting and challenging from a fire protection prospective; the complex consists of residential units, office, retail, theater, and parking, all with different fire protection demands. A person can live, work, shop, and be entertained there without leaving the building.
NFP installed wet pipe sprinkler systems, dry pipe sprinkler systems, standpipes, and fire pumps. The mixed-use nature of the complex resulted in the use of both CPVC and steel piping. CPVC pipe was installed in the residential units, with steel utilized throughout the rest of the complex.
