James V. Forrestal Building

In 2005, National Fire Protection was awarded the fire protection portion of the Life Safety Renovations for the General Services Administration at the Department of Energy’s Forrestal Building. Named after the first secretary of defense, the Forrestal Building serves as the headquarters of the department.

New fire protection systems were required for the majority of the 1,600,000 square feet in the complex’s three buildings. Each standard floor level was phased, with approximately three weeks to install 800 sprinklers. The rest of the building was split into small phases that filled in the schedule gaps. A total of 18,250 sprinklers were required, with over 10,000 flexible drops installed to assist in the scheduling demands. In addition, a fire pump was installed and the majority of the work was performed at night.

Under your leadership this project has exceeded all anticipated performance measures and contributed immeasurably to maintaining the overall timeline for Research Development, Testing, and Evaluation.
